HOYC Cheerleaders win 1st at SpiritFest!!!

Herndon Optimist Youth Cheerleading sent 2 squads to the SpiritFest Cheerleading Competition in Laurel, MD on Saturday, February 2, 2008. Both squads received 1st place in their divisions. The competition included teams from Maryland and Virginia.

The HOYC Senior squad placed 1st in the Senior Teen Large Group division. The 22 member senior squad included girls from 9 to 14 years old. This squad is coached by Annette Kelley, Melissa Reynolds, Lindsay Hyman & Malia Phelps. “The Sr. Squad had many challenges. The squad which competed at SpiritFest, was made of two different age groups which provides challenges when working together for the first time. The girls worked very hard individually and as a team to meet their goal. We are so proud of all that they have accomplished.” said Annette Kelley.

The HOYC Junior Hornets placed 1st in the Pee Wee Small Group division. The squad consisted of 14 girls, ranging from 6 to 8 years old, and is coached by Lori Jacobsen and Adina Colander. Lori Jacobsen said "These girls are amazing! They may be young, but they are strong, enthusiastic and know the meaning of team work. As a team they have achieved so much and we are very proud of them."

This is the second year HOYC has sent a group of girls to a cheerleading competition in the winter season. Last year the girls placed first in the Small Mighty Might category ages 6-10 yr olds.
