Basketball Travel League - Updated 11/5/07
Welcome—to another exciting year of Herndon Travel Basketball program sponsored by the Herndon Optimist Club, last year our Travel program fielded 9 teams 4 girls and 5 boys’ competitive teams. We had an extremely successful year many of our teams made the playoffs. We continued to receive support from Herndon High School coaches, who attended many of our games observing projected program players. This year they have planned a player/coach clinic inviting both Haley league and travel league.

Beginning Monday, October 1 we will be holding Herndon Travel Basketball tryouts (See tryout page). Although we are a "travel/county" league, games are played in Fairfax County Middle and High School gyms. Herndon Travel teams play as part of Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (FCYBL), which is a highly competitive league using high school rules and referees. Information about the FCYBL and league rules check out website at www.fcybl.org. All girls aged 9 ½ -14 and boys aged 10-18 are eligible to play provided they are not participating on a high school basketball team. The ages are determined as of October 1, 2007 and players must be residents of Fairfax County.

For tryout information, please view our Tryouts page for a detailed listing of tryout times and dates.

Also check the Travel League pages regularly after November through February for other useful information throughout the season.

We strongly encourage full participation of all Herndon eligible zip codes at these tryouts for every interested athlete. Our coaches have years of experience in coaching and developing young people into great citizens in the community. Several coaches work year round developing players for high school and the next level. We encourage all youth to tryout and please allow the travel coaches to evaluate the player talent, skill level and advise you of your potential completion needed to continue developing your basketball game. Ask them how to improve your game. This is the only way we have to ensure that each team has the best talent available. Try-outs will last about two weeks. As the commercial says, "Just Do it".

Last season we allow the players to retain their high quality uniforms for upcoming year. We will continue to use the same vendor’s uniforms. Any selected incoming players will need to purchase a new uniform. A registration fee; $125 per player is required for all players. This includes those with serviceable uniform. New players or players needing replacement uniform; an additional fee of $75 will be required after being selected for a team. Coaches will order new uniforms after team selection.

Once again, we will be utilizing online electronic registration. Please also note that the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League requires each player obtain a Virginia Department of Vehicles Identification Card (NOT a driver’s license, but a photo DMV ID). Passports cannot be used as form of ID. ID cards may be obtained at numerous locations throughout the state and require the applicants to provide their proof of age and have a photo taken.

Parents are encouraged to participate as volunteer assistant coaches, score keepers, team parent, and gym monitors. Coaches are encouraged to act as Volunteer Building Directors (VBDs) during practices but separate VBDs are desired. The video for acquiring VBD card can be viewed at any local Fairfax County library. This position is vital in keeping the cost of registration down.

Games usually begin the first week of December and, depending on weather and school activity postponements, will end in March. Players should plan on playing in Thanksgiving/Christmas tournaments. Each team will generally practice twice during each week (Monday – Friday) for 1½ hours (October – early March). When schools are closed, practices do NOT occur during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Practices for all age groups will occur in one of the Herndon area public schools. The season’s game schedule (date, time and place) will be given to each player during November, except Boys 15 and 18 schedules which will be available in December as games for those age groups do not begin until January.

If you have any questions about the Travel program, please call Tom Benton at (703) 437 8274 or send e-mail to Travel Basketball. Our coaches’ goal is to see that each child has an enjoyable basketball experience. We look forward to seeing you at tryouts!
